Federal Phœnix Books

Federal Phœnix books take their theme from this famous political cartoon of 1864 by Sir John Tenniel, the illustrator of Lewis Carroll's Alice books.

The cartoon, which appeared in Punch just after Lincoln's re-election, shows him as the mythical bird rising anew from a pyre fueled by the government's credit, American commerce, the free press, the right of habeas corpus, states' rights, and the Constitution.

We're here to find out how that happened — and how it explains what's happening today.
